Dear Rotarian,

The Rotary Club of Mitchell River from District 9820 in Bairnsdale, Victoria is supporting Rotarian John Nelson and Ted Lowe to raise funds for the Bionic Ear Institute and to assist the Meningitis and Meningococcal Association.

The project for the Bionic Ear Institute is called "Help the Children Hear". Funds will allocated to a new research program that will enable very young children to be fitted with two implants rather than one. This means they will be able to hear in stereo and be able to work out what direction sounds are coming from - something not possible at the moment. It is hoped that their hearing and communication skills will be as good as other children of their age. This could mean they will be able to attend mainstream schools and have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

John's interest in the Meningitis and Meningococcal Association follows his fight with the meningococcal disease in 2002. As a result of contracting the disease John lost both legs and is determined to complete the fund raising bike ride down the west coast of Australia.

The D9820 District Governor, Rotarian Ray Martin, is supporting the project and has contacted the District Governor in your District.

John and Ted have commenced training for the project and for it to be successful, we are requesting support from all Rotary Clubs along the route.

The support can be in various ways: accommodation, press releases, information sessions at schools, attendance at Dinner Meetings or barbecues, riding with the John and Ted into your town or city, arrange a welcome function and inviting the Mayor, etc.

Hence it is important for Rotary Clubs to respond by indicating their support to the project by:
- naming a Rotarian responsible for the project and to be the contact person.
- completing and sending back the Response Forms below.

John and Ted will be supported with a back-up vehicle and with either one or two support personnel.

The Rotary Club of Mitchell River urge your Club to support our project and help us to "Help the Children Hear".

Yours sincerely,
John Butler
Secretary
